Be Sure to See 'Cut & Paste' While You Can!

Just to remind you: my awesome collage exhibit "Cut & Paste" is currently up at the Mud Pie Vegan Bakery & Coffeeshop. Why am I reminding you now, you may ask, when you have until May 19th to see these babies?

This and the other pics are from my opening.

Maybe it's because I know that many of you are thinking, "I have soo much time to see those" and you'll keep putting it off and putting it off and then you'll miss the show!


So go see them, dang it! They're worth your time and it's a lovely place to be regardless...

Seen Around Midtown: Switzer School

At the beginning of the month, Matt and I explored the Switzer School, which has been closed since the 1980s. I've been waiting for a chance to post these pictures, and I guess today's the day!

As abandoned buildings go, the Switzer School is quite interesting because, rather than being a single building, it is a complex of 3 separate buildings. The spaces between the buildings were cluttered with debris from broken windows, what looked like pieces of roofing tiles, and various other junk left by persons unknown.

The first image is the far left section of this building.

This sign isn't very effective at keeping people out.

Around the side of the second building is a grassy area
that separates the 2nd and 3rd buildings.

There was a strange little opening that we went through
that led to another grassy area...

This in-between area was graffitied even more heavily than the rest

of the building. Apparently it is/was a popular place to party?

Queer Sexologist/Performer Annie Sprinkles TONIGHT!

I'm super excited that Annie Sprinkles is coming to UMKC tonight!!! If you don't know who I'm talking about, here's her introduction via her website:

I’m an artist, sexologist, ecosexual, author, lecturer, educator and thespian. I’ve also been a sex worker of all sorts, a pioneering adult film director/performer and a professional photographer. I’m the first porn star to have earned a Ph.D., my work is studied in major universities internationally, I’ve shown at the best museums and galleries-- and I’m still going strong!

Tonight she'll be at the UMKC Multi-purpose Room, 4th Floor, New Student Union, 5100 Cherry Street. The UMKC Queer Alliance, who is bringing her to town, said this in their announcement:

She has devoted the 35 years to researching and exploring sexuality, from the sacred to the profane, documenting and sharing her experiences through explicit films, photography, and sex workshops. For the two decades she has toured her controversial theater shows... internationally to great acclaim. Currently her work is about love, relationships, breast cancer, aging and the place where ecology and sexology intersect, which she calls Sexecology. Today she is an out “ecosexual.” Annie will share her work, do mini-performances, and stimulate discussion with the audience.

After the presentation will be the World's First Ecosex Cake Contest. Make baked goods that explore the theme of "ecosex", whatever that means to you. Cakes can be about environmental issues, the eroticism of nature, recycling, about how the human body is nature, etc. Cakes do not have to be edible. But it is nice. Each cake wins a prize.

So if that sounds fun to you, I will see you there!

Truth and Environmental Consequences

We all have to face some harsh truths about the world we're living in. It's been one year since the BP oil rig Deepwater Horizon exploded. According to the National Audubon Society:

The BP disaster has had significant impacts on birds, other wildlife, coastal communities, and vital beach and wetland habitat in the region. Now, months after the oil has stopped flowing, we know that its lasting impacts will only be revealed over time—and recovery will be a long-term process. The oil washing ashore last year occurred at the height of breeding season, with dire implications for many species of birds—including Brown Pelicans, just removed from the Endangered Species list.

However, birds are not the only populations impacted, of course. It is disappointing, to say the least, that the government still has yet to take action when so many problems remain. The Sierra Club reports:

In January, the President's Oil Spill Commission released their final recommendations which support many of the Gulf Coast's recovery priorities, while helping to protect our nation's coasts from future drilling disasters. Gulf communities are still waiting for action from Congress and the Administration to restore the region.

But an even bigger concern to the health of everyone in the world is the current nuclear crisis. This video, featuring a talk by Dr. Helen Caldicott, lays out the dangers presented to human health:

We are going to have some serious consequences of the industrialization of the world to deal with in our immediate future. I hope we're all up to it... and yet, I fear most are just sticking their heads in the sand.

Cut & Paste: My Exhibit of Collages

OMG! So busy!! I've been working all day to set-up my show for the opening reception tomorrow. The pieces are all hung (hooray!) though I still have a few other tasks to complete.

My friend Bob has been so helpful through this entire process, from suggesting the location, to chatting me up to the owners, and helping me set up today! He's possibly my biggest fan, as you can tell from how he blurbed me:

Poet, artist, activist and blogger extraordinaire, May is one of the most dynamically original and creative people I've ever met. I think you'll delight in her edgy, funny, sexy, playful, evocative, colorful and thought-provoking collages... This is art to intrigue the mind, entertain the eyes, and stimulate the soul!

I'm really excited and hope that, if you can, you'll come out and see my show tomorrow evening at the Mud Pie Vegan Bakery & Coffeeshop from 6-9, or sometime in the next month. And, just because I love you, here's a sneak peek:

Art and More Art!

Yesterday I kept feeling like I was forgetting something, but didn't remember that I hadn't posted here until I woke up at 6 am this morning to pee... maybe because I blogged for work? I don't know, but sorry! to anyone who actually missed me. (If you did, leave a comment, cause that will make my day).


Today I want to remind you about the awesome NOW benefit that's happening tomorrow evening at the Scarlet Garnett. I've got several paintings showing, and there are some personal friends and at least one of my personal heroes from the local art scene also participating! It's going to be an awesome evening. I hope you stop by!
AAAAAAAAAAAAND I'm also having another solo show, this one at the Mud Pie Vegan Bakery and Coffeeshop, April 15 - May 19. I'll be showing over 30 of my collages! I'm really excited because the space is so great and I absolutely LOVE my collages! I'm happy to get to share them finally. I've been looking for an opportunity for a while and nothing's worked out til now.

I'm having an opening reception April 15 from 6-9 PM. You can see the newly-hung pieces, chat me up, and try out a delicious vegan cupcake or something :) Please spread the word!
